Collagen Stimulators

Another form of volumiser is the group of products called collagen stimulators. The can be used in most parts of the face, necks and hands, but are not recommended for the lips. They are more problematical in small accumulation areas such as the under-eye (infraorbital) areas and the corners of the mouth.
These products work in an entirely different manner to the H/A type of product. The active product (polylactic acid is the most common) are in a water or gel base. When injected, there is an immediate volume effect. However, this effect disappears as the water is re-absorbed. The collagen stimulating particles which are left behind will cause a stimulatory effect on the body’s fibroblast cells, resulting in new and increased collagen formation. This will lead to skin thickening increased elasticity and better hydration of the skin. This process will continue over a period of weeks to months. Thus, if a more immediate result is required, then this method should not be chosen.
This type of treatment is not for individual, specific lines, but as a general area improver such as crepy skin of the lower cheek area or around the sides of the mouth. It can also be used for cheek enhancement, hands etc. Generally, 2 to 3 treatment sessions are required at 6 to 8 week intervals. Treatment lasts from 18 months to several years. There is a higher incidence of lump formation than in H/A type treatments. Results can vary from patient to patient, depending on age, severity of elasticity loss and other unknown factors.
