Keturah Wins FIVE Beauty Industry Awards!

Jemma Stergiou

Perth’s Keturah Day Spa Group has been leaving their mark on the national beauty industry this month! At the end of August Keturah took home five accolades at two national beauty industry awards ceremonies.

At the Australian Beauty Industry (ABIA) Awards Keturah was announced as the winner of the Best Marketing Award and inducted into the Honor Roll for Best Day Spa. Earlier in the month Keturah was also announced as winner of three awards at the Pevonia National Awards – Day Spa Group of the Year, Day Spa Marketing Excellence and Day Spa Customer Service Excellence.

Keturah, which has four day spa locations across Perth – in Highgate, Fremantle, Carine Glades and Nedlands – is celebrating a milestone birthday this year, turning 20 years old on 1 December 2014.

Keturah Day Spa Group Director, Kim Stergiou, commented: “What a way to enter our third decade, with these accolades to honor the outstanding work that all of our staff have put in over the years, and this year in particular, to help our business prosper – we have grown from a 4 treatment room business to a 23 treatment room business at 4 locations in such a short time. We couldn’t have won these awards or made such amazing strides without the support of our staff, local suppliers and of course our customers, so for that we would like to extend our gratitude.”

As part of Keturah’s 20th Birthday celebrations, and as a thank you to customers, Keturah will be running a range of promotions and special offers in December, so keep an eye on www.drupal.saashimi.website for more information on those in the coming weeks.

Differences Between Eastern vs Western Massage?

Jemma Stergiou

Massage therapy is one of the oldest healing traditions, and so the varieties of massages available today come from a diverse mix of cultures and styles. These can be split into two major categories – Eastern Massage and Western Massage. Whilst they differ in their approach, both have their benefits and applications. Here we give you some background on each style and help you decide which is best for treating your ailments.

Eastern vs. Western Medicine

Massage has always been used to compliment traditional medicine in healing the body and treating different kinds of chronic health problems including sleep disorders (insomnia), chronic pains and chronic fatigue syndromes, so it’s no surprise that both Eastern and Western massage have roots alongside the medicine of their respective cultures.

Eastern medicine practitioners are trained to view the body as one unified system incorporating the physical body, the mind and the spirit – otherwise known as a holistic approach. Western medicine, on the other hand, traditionally separates the body by its different functions and only focuses on healing the area where pain is felt or disease is experienced. This holistic versus segmented or focussed approach is evident in the styles of Eastern versus Western massage respectively.

Eastern Massage Approach to Healing

This type of massage approach addresses the energy flow and balance within the body, stimulating and soothing specific points along the ‘energy meridians’ to create effects at other sites along those meridians. Based on the energy flow and balance, it works to attain a balance of energy in the mind and body.

Eastern Massage Therapists will find what areas of the body to focus on by determining where your energy imbalances lie. They can do this in a number of ways – one such way is to examine the pulse at three positions on the wrist. From this, imbalances and disharmonies in various parts of the body can be detected.

Western Massage Approach to Healing

Western Massage leans more heavily towards the physical, with a mechanistic approach to diagnosing the problem and addressing it directly.

Western Massage Therapists focus on the individual parts of the body where symptoms (such as pain or discomfort) lie. The therapist will examine the symptoms and focus their massage techniques in these areas.

Eastern vs. Western Massage Techniques

Eastern Massage uses pressure points along the energy meridians of the body. Stimulating and soothing these particular areas will improve the energy flow outwards along those meridians, having a positive effect on the areas regulated by each pressure point. The physical techniques used to stimulate the pressure points include rolling, rocking and striking them. These techniques are much more vigorous than those used in Western Massage.

Western Massage, on the other hand, promotes higher levels of relaxation by using circular motions that help to relieve muscle tension in symptomatic areas. This massage style uses five stoke techniques including kneading, gliding, tapping, friction and vibration.

What Massage Style is Right for You?

Your personal comfort levels will help decide which style would work best for you. Eastern Massage tends to be more vigorous during the massage, but the focus on Energy points will leave both your mind and body feeling relaxed and revived afterwards.

Western Massage on the other hand will provide focussed and immediate relief for aches and pains as well as aiding relaxation in the body during the treatment.

However, what often works best is to use techniques from both disciplines to provide a holistic and focussed relief of symptoms. Before your massage with us you can speak to your massage therapist who can talk you through the different techniques applied during the massage you have chosen, and depending on your symptoms and your preferences we can tailor your massage to your needs.

Five Tips for Surviving the Christmas Party Season

Jemma Stergiou

The Christmas party season is fast approaching, and it’s time to start preparing yourself for the late nights, glamorous gatherings and tired mornings! There’s lots to think about in the build up to Christmas, so we’ve put together this list of five tips to help you survive the Christmas party season, with style, grace, and good health:

1. Be Prepared

In order to make the most of this year’s party season, you need to be prepared. If you want to look your best, make sure you book your beauty appointments well in advance to avoid disappointment – we’re filling up fast for December already here at Keturah! People are known to book their appointments months ahead of schedule! We do have extended trading hours and open the Sunday prior to Christmas so make a list of any beauty services you’ll need for each of your events, and call as soon as possible to reserve a spot with your beauty therapist or hairdresser.

2. Stay Hydrated

Inevitably, at some point during the festive period, you’ll need to avoid a hangover. Make sure you stay hydrated to increase your chances of feeling fresh the morning after a crazy party. Pace yourself, spacing out your drinks throughout the night. Alcohol is a diuretic, causing dehydration. Hangovers are primarily caused by dehydration so, if you can stay hydrated during the party, you’ll dramatically reduce the probability of a debilitating hangover the morning after. Coconut water has also been found to replace lost electrolytes and improve hydration levels. Our top tip to decrease the odds of a hangover is to keep a bottle of coconut water in your fridge at home and drink it before you go to sleep after the party!

3. Get Pampered at the Start of December

Whilst it can be tempting to book your appointments for the days preceding important social engagements, you should give your skin a beauty boost at the start of December too. Indulge in some pampering to keep you looking great throughout the month –facials are a great choice to prepare your skin for the festive season, ensuring a radiant glow. It’s also possible to get long-lasting beauty treatments, such as shellac nails. Shellac nail varnish is long wearing and chip resistant, so can keep your hands looking pretty throughout the party season! Our creative Hair Stylists can also do an amazing Upstyle for your Christmas Functions.

4. Invest in Your Skin

Skincare’s always important, but you’ll need to pay a little extra attention to your skin throughout December. Late nights and the strong Perth sun can take their toll on the delicate skin around your face, particularly if you forget to stay hydrated at one of your Christmas parties. At the start of the month, ramp up the skincare routine and invest in some high quality products, paying special attention to your moisturiser. This Lumafirm repair cream is perfect, as it has been designed especially to rehydrate, repair and protect skin, whilst providing instant radiance.

5. When All Else Fails, Cover Up!

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, lack of sleep, partying and alcohol can take its toll on our delicate bodies. If this happens to you, all isn’t lost! Make sure you have a good supply of cosmetics available especially for the morning after, and you’ll be able to disguise how you’re feeling.

Alternatively, if you have back-to-back parties planned, you should consider booking an appointment for professional make up application at Keturah Highgate or Nedlands so you can rest assured that you’ll look fabulous, even if you had a heavy night the night before!

Questions to ask your wedding hair and makeup specialists

Jemma Stergiou

March is the busiest month of the year for weddings in Perth – with the weather beginning to cool but sunshine still on the cards for the big day. At Keturah, we understand that you want your hair and makeup to look perfect on your wedding day and we are here to help you achieve that. We’ve already taken a look at how you can change your beauty routine in advance of the big day, but now let’s take a look at some different aspects you should discuss with your beauty specialist in order to look flawless on the day.

Timing Is Everything

Be sure to ask your beauty specialists to estimate how long it will take you to get your hair and makeup done on the day of your wedding. Expect it to take a minimum of an hour and a half to two hours to get them both completed. You want your look to be fresh, so avoid having them created at daybreak unless you have an early wedding. In general, you want to show up for your appointment with a freshly-cleaned, moisturised face and your hair washed the night before. If you prefer, your stylist can gently clean your skin for you. Make sure your makeup specialist applies a primer to your face, which helps to smooth your skin, prepare it for your makeup application, and keep it fresh for the remainder of your special day. Discuss timing with your hair stylist and makeup artist, and let them know what time of day your ceremony will begin.

A Trial Run

Make sure your hair and makeup will be exactly as you like it when it really matters. To ensure you have the highest level of confidence on your big day, it is best to schedule an appointment to try out hair and makeup looks ahead of time. Spend this time with your stylists, describing exactly what type of look you are after. You don’t want to spend the day before your wedding worrying if you are going to look as pretty as you hope you will. A trial run will eliminate some of the worry and anxiety associated with the day before your big event.

Skin Treatments

If you decide to have a hydrating facial, waxing or other skin treatment, it is best to have it done several days beforehand. Don’t forget to have your brows plucked, shaped and dyed if necessary. Taking care of this ahead of time will ensure that your skin will not have any redness, but will still be fresh and glowing from the treatment. If you colour your hair, ask yourself when you think it looks the best. Some people like the way it looks immediately after colouring it, while others think their colour looks best after a few days of new growth and washing. Plan accordingly.

Brand Awareness

If you prefer a specific brand of hair products or makeup, be sure to let your stylist know about it. If you don’t have a preference, allow your stylist to select skin products for you that are hypoallergenic and long-lasting. Using high-quality makeup and styling products is your best bet to getting that well-polished look that you desire. Using premium beauty products long before your wedding day will help you look your best when it matters the most.
Be Yourself

When deciding on what type of hair and makeup look you are after, people often want something different or out of the ordinary. There is nothing wrong with wanting something unique, but be sure not to stray too far away from what you normally look like. The idea is to present the best, most beautiful version of you, not to turn yourself into a different person. If you normally wear a lot of bold colours, aim to tone it down. If you normally wear very little makeup, you will need to wear a little bit more to avoid looking unfinished or lifeless in your photographs. In either case, your true beauty will shine through when you combine your natural look with a bright smile!

Selecting a Makeup Palette

Ask your make-up artist for suggestions in selecting the right makeup palette for your wedding. Once you have decided on the colours you like, take some photos at home after your trial run to ensure that you like the way your face looks in flash photography. Don’t forget to have your makeup blended down to your neck and to wear a soft shimmer on your décolleté area. Your makeup artist will need to apply a coloured concealer underneath your chosen foundation in order to hide imperfections. Setting it with a touch of translucent powder will help your foundation stay put, without looking caked-on. A touch of highlighter on the top of your cheekbones will help create a luminous effect, without adding too much shimmer.

Making It Last

Other than avoiding heavy wind and rain (not something you usually have to worry about in Perth’s peak wedding season!), there are additional measures you can take to keep your look as flawless as possible. Chances are, you will tear up on your wedding day or may sweat with anticipation. Waterproof mascara and eye shadow primer are your best friends.

Choosing the Right Hairstyle

When working with your hair stylist to create the perfect hairstyle for your wedding, select a style that will complement your gown instead of competing with it. Consider how formal your dress and ceremony are and let it dictate how you style your hair. For example, if you are having a small country wedding and you are wearing a peasant dress, romantic tendrils decorated with small flowers would be a fitting look. To match a dress that is more sleek and modern, you may choose to have your hair in an elaborate up-do. The most important thing you can do to make your hair look beautiful on your wedding day is to make it smooth and shiny. Ask your hair stylist to spray it with an anti-static spray to control flyaways. Using a quality moisturising conditioner and a shine serum will also help you achieve the best look for your best day.

At Keturah, our team of qualified hair and makeup stylists are here to ensure your ultimate satisfaction. Let us help you create the look you have always dreamed about – book a trial at your nearest day spa location!

Some of Hollywood’s finest, like these five, have learned to enjoy the relaxation and beauty treatments on offer at the day spa – check out their preferred treatments!

David Beckham

Have you noticed that most celebrity men have a bronzed glow? With all of the recent media attention on the harm that could be caused by lying out in the sun, men have started using spas and spray tanning.

Take Bradley Cooper for example, who has been known to get a spray tan to avoid farmers tans and sock tans. Tan stomachs can also add to the illusion of a six pack.

Jay Z

After being named one of the best looking men on the planet several times, George Clooney has a lot to live up to. Even in his fifties, he still maintains his handsome appearance with the help of his day spa.

Clooney’s favourites are some of the regulars, including waxing and facials. He has also tried some less conventional treatments. He leads the way on wrinkle relaxers in the genital area, and has been known to discuss it publicly! As inspiring of a man as Clooney is, he may just start the next big trend among male salon goers.

Snoop Dogg

All you need to do to know that Snoop Dogg is a regular at the beauty salon is to check out his social media accounts. He publicly shows off manicures – they are not only for women. Like Snoop Dogg, celebrities like Johnny Depp and Keith Richards have also been known to have their nails done by a professional.

At Keturah, we have a growing male clientele and have even developed a range of specialised treatments just for men!

Day Spa FAQs for Pregnant Women and New Mums

Jemma Stergiou

Can I get a massage while I am pregnant?

Providing it is after the first trimester of pregnancy (after 3 months) Pregnancy Massage is both safe and beneficial for expectant mums to receive massage up to the due date and beyond.

The frequency of massage throughout your pregnancy varies as each women and pregnancy is different. Usually massage is recommended once a month during the second trimester (3-6 months), and then more often during the third trimester (6-9months), but it’s very much up to what you feel you need.

At Keturah Day Spa we have a specifically designed 3-piece cushion which is securely attached to our treatment bed for your ultimate comfort during Pregnancy Massage. This allows Mums-to-be to safely lay flat on their tummy for ultimate relaxation. As your baby grows we can increase the size of the hole depending on your needs.

Massage is a great way for expectant mums to alleviate discomfort and prepare their body for the experience of giving birth. If you have special circumstances however, you should contact your doctor before booking an appointment.

Is waxing safe while I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Waxing is perfectly safe as its all natural, containing no chemicals or ingredients that could potentially harm your baby. Many women will go about the normal waxing treatments but it’s not uncommon for some to stay away from waxing during their pregnancy due to the increased blood flow and hyper sensitivity. For this reason, it’s ideal to test on a small area beforehand and inform your beauty salon that you’re pregnant.

Hair removal creams however do contain chemicals so it’s strongly advised you stay away from them.

Cellulite Treatments that Actually Work!

Jemma Stergiou

Most women are well aware of cellulite, and we’d rather not have it. What isn’t commonly known is what can be done to effectively get rid of it. Many lotions and potions claim to reduce it, but what really works? We’re going to bust some cellulite myths and give you some tips on the best ways to get rid of it.

What is Cellulite?

In scientific terms, cellulite forms when pockets of fat squeeze between bands of tissue under the skin. These bands, or septae, are supposed to hold fat in place, but depending on your genetics, fat cells can squeeze between the septae, leading to a lumpy ‘cottage cheese’ look.

Men rarely have cellulite, because in men the bands of tissue (septae) that keep fat in place are in a criss cross pattern, and they’re stronger than those in women, whose septae are flimsier and in parallel lines.

Cellulite Myths Busted

Myth #1 – Only overweight people have cellulite

One of the most widespread myths about cellulite is that it only affects overweight women. However, while cellulite can be quite sexist – targeting more women than men – among women, cellulite does not discriminate. It affects women of all ages, shapes, races and sizes, usually starting around puberty. If you’re lucky enough to have minimal to no cellulite, it’s probably due to good genes.

Myth #2 – Liposuction is a quick & easy method to rid cellulite

Although medical procedures like lipo may seem like an easy way to get rid of cellulite, one of the most common myths about cellulite is that losing weight will automatically eliminate it.

While it is true that having more fat may make cellulite more pronounced, swift and unnatural weight loss will leave your skin saggy, and may even make cellulite more noticeable.

Myth #3 – There is a magical cellulite cream out there

Topical treatments can help build collagen in your skin. Collagen is part of what makes up the septae under your skin that holds fat cells in place. Applying topical collagen treatments can’t hurt, and may help, but it’s not going to do all the work for you.

What Actually Gets Rid of Cellulite?

Natural Weight Loss

While quick-fix weight loss like lipo and fad diets can leave your skin and cellulite in a worse condition that when you started, the healthiest and most effective methods of reducing cellulite are often the most natural ones. Steady and natural weight loss from a change of lifestyle is the best way to reduce cellulite. Eating right and exercising often will allow your body to expel excess fat naturally and evenly and allow your skin time to spring back into shape little by little.

Maintaining a Healthy Weight

Once you reach a healthy weight, maintaining a that weight can help to manage and further reduce cellulite. Maintaining a healthy weight means your skin and the tissues underneath retain strength and elasticity.

Weight Training

Lifting weights can be a huge help in improving cellulite. Weight training leads to more defined muscles, toned and taught body and smoother skin.

Endermologie

Slow and steady weight loss isn’t always possible. Rapid weight gain and loss can occur at many times in life – brought on by hormonal changes associated with aging, puberty, pregnancy or menopause. If this is the case for you, or if your attempts to rid your skin of cellulite naturally haven’t yielded results, then Endermologie treatments could be the next step and the answer to your prayers.

Endermologie is an effective, non-invasive cellulite treatment. The treatment feels like a deep massage, and is carried out using a machine that effectively kneads, rolls and manipulates the fat tissue, increasing circulation and working stored fat out of the body.

Endermologie treatments can lift, sculpt, shape, and reduce the volume of fat in the skin, targeting areas that can be difficult to target with diet and exercise.

At Keturah Day Spa, we have the only top-of-the-line Integral Endermologie machine in Perth, which uses the most up-to-date technology in the field. If you’re trying to eliminate cellulite and natural methods aren’t working for you, contact us today to set up an appointment or find out more.

94.5 Kids Appeal

Jemma Stergiou

Keturah Day Spa made a radio appearance in August on Mix 94.5 as part of the 94.5 Kids Appeal. Two of our expert beauticians gave radio host Pete Curulli a full body wax to raise money for the Telethon Kids Appeal. By auctioning off body parts to wax clean, Pete managed to raise $600 – and we at Keturah are more than happy to be a part of that effort!

10 Steps to Perfect Skin on Your Wedding Day

Jemma Stergiou

The Bridal Bible: Ten Steps to Perfect Skin on Your Wedding Day

There’s plenty to worry about in the months, weeks and days leading up to your wedding. From whether your dress is a perfect fit to whether your uncle will tell his embarrassing jokes at the reception – the average bride has plenty to obsess about. So, the last thing you need is the added worry of whether your skin is going to be in the best shape for those all-important wedding photos (that last forever)!

To get the complexion of your dreams on your big day, it’s important that you start preparing sooner than later. For perfect skin when you say “I do,” follow these ten steps to a flawless, glowing complexion.

10. Eat Clean

When: Anywhere from a year to a month before the big day

Eating clean won’t just help you look spectacular in your gown. Eating clean – as in sticking to whole grains, lean meats and fresh produce – will help to make you glow from the inside out. For an extra glow, eat foods that are rich in skin-friendly antioxidants, such as berries, in addition to foods packed with healthy fatty acids, like fish.

9. Hydrate

When: Begin as soon as possible

One of the simplest ways to give your skin a glow is by staying hydrated. If you take your weight in pounds and divide it in half, this will give you the number of ounces of water that you should be drinking everyday for glowing, healthy skin and hair.

8. Begin a Skincare Routine

When: At least three months before the wedding

Facials are great, but nothing beats a consistent skincare routine at home each night. Cleanse your skin in the AM and PM before applying treatment or products with a gentle but effective cleanser, such as the Pevonia Sensitive Skin Cleanser. In the morning, apply a sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from damage – we love the Hydrating SPF 30+ Sunscreen. In the evenings, use a treatment targeted towards your specific skin concerns, but always follow with a great moisturiser like the Timeless Repair Cream.

Now is also a good time to begin an Endermologie Treatment program. Endermologie can be used to drain, sculpt, contour and firm the face and body, which is perfect leading up to your Wedding – it’s a skin gym! It reduces cellulite and targets areas that need to be lifted or contoured, but can be hard to target with diet and exercise – and it’s 100% natural and non-invasive!

7. Avoid Pore-Clogging Makeup

When: In the three months leading up to saying “I do”

Even if you regularly use liquid foundation and plan to wear it when you walk down the aisle, even the best foundations can clog your pores. If you really want clear skin on your big day, switch to a mineral makeup in the few months leading up to your wedding. This will prevent any new blemishes or clogged pores. We recommend this mineral powder foundation for daily wear.

6. Prep Your Body

When: Two months leading up to your wedding

Don’t put all your focus on your face! Give your full body some love by exfoliating in the shower with a thick exfoliant, like the Silky Skin Body Scrub. Follow up with a lotion that will guarantee smooth skin. A body moisturiser that contains Alpha Hydroxy Acid will help to banish dead skin cells and leave you with a silky smooth finish. Try the Preserve Body Moisturizer with AHA.

5. Pause to De-Stress

When: Four weeks before the big day

Stress is terrible for your skin. It can rob you of your radiance and make you look dull and tired. Taking a break to forget about wedding-planning worries and de-stress will not only give your spirit a boost, but also restore your skin’s vibrancy. A quick massage can easily be fit in during your lunch hour and is the perfect way to leave stress behind.

4. Get a Facial

When: Two weeks before your wedding

A great skincare regimen is wonderful, but a facial is the best way to really ensure your skin glows. Book a facial appointment two weeks before your wedding. This will ensure that any redness from your appointment has diminished, but that your skin is still sporting the glowing effects of your professional treatment.

3. Banish Fuzz

When: A week before the wedding

It’s hard to enjoy your smooth and glowing skin if you’re plagued by unwanted body hair. Visit the spa for a wax a week before your big day to ensure that you’ll be hair-free when you walk down the aisle.

2. Get Glowing

When: A few days before you say “I do”

A spray tan will give you a gorgeous sun-kissed glow, that unlike a real tan, won’t cause any damage or premature signs of aging. Go in for your spray tan a few days before your big day, to ensure that the colour is still vibrant when you walk down the aisle.

1. Have Your Makeup Done

When: The morning of your special day

The final step in wedding-perfect skin is getting your makeup professionally done an hour or so before you walk down the aisle.
